Tokenization helped Q2 protect sensitive data in transit before it entered their environment—minimizing exposure while maintaining the performance and scale required to support over 1,400 financial institutions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tokenization is a data protection method that replaces sensitive data with a non-sensitive token, while storing the original value securely in a separate vault. The token has no meaningful relationship to the original data, reducing exposure risk while preserving usability for analytics and operations.

Both FPE and tokenization protect sensitive data while preserving its usability, but they work differently. Tokenization replaces sensitive values with surrogate tokens that have no meaningful relationship to the original data; the mapping between token and original value is stored and managed separately. FPE is a true cryptographic operation: the ciphertext is mathematically derived from the original value using a key and algorithm, and can be reversed with the correct key. FPE is often better suited for high-throughput environments where managing token mappings at scale adds complexity, while tokenization is a strong choice when you want to remove any derivable relationship between the protected value and its substitute entirely.

Tokenization replaces sensitive data with a non-sensitive token and stores the original securely, removing exposure risk entirely. Data masking transforms data in place (e.g., hiding or partially showing values) so it remains usable but controlled.

ALTR uses Snowflake’s external tokenization architecture, the purpose-built method Snowflake provides for integrating tokenization directly into the data platform. Access control is enforced through Snowflake’s native masking policy engine: when a user queries a tokenized column, the masking policy evaluates their authorization and calls an ALTR external function to resolve the real value if permitted. Unauthorized users see only the token. There’s no custom SQL, no application code to change, and no new access layer to manage, just policy defined in ALTR, enforced natively by Snowflake.

Vaulted tokenization is ALTR’s general-purpose engine for protecting PII, PCI data, and any sensitive structured value at scale. Critical tokenization is our specialized engine for payment card environments, validated for CVV handling, and PCI DSS Level 1 certified. Most organizations start with Vaulted; organizations that need to handle CVVs require Critical.

Yes. Deterministic tokens map a single input value consistently to the same token — enabling analytics joins, cohort analysis, AI model training, and any use case requiring referential integrity. Non-deterministic tokens generate a new token for each tokenization event, providing maximum security in contexts where consistency isn’t required.

Tokenization is a usage-based add-on to ALTR’s platform pricing, based on the number of tokens created and the volume of detokenization operations. Contact ALTR for specific pricing.
